Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most respected classical dance forms of India. It originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu, where it was traditionally performed by temple dancers as a form of devotion to the gods, especially Lord Shiva.

The word Bharatanatyam is believed to be a combination of:

  • Bhava (expression),

  • Raga (melody),

  • Tala (rhythm), and

  • Natya (dance).

Bharatanatyam is known for its graceful movements, precise footwork, and powerful expressions. The dance tells stories from Hindu mythology using hand gestures (mudras), facial expressions (abhinaya), and rhythmic patterns.

A typical performance includes different parts like Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Varnam, Padams, and Tillana, each showcasing a blend of technique and emotion.

Learning Bharatanatyam requires dedication and discipline. Dancers undergo years of training to master posture, rhythm, and storytelling. It is not only a performing art but also a spiritual journey that connects the dancer to culture, history, and the divine.

Today, Bharatanatyam is performed and appreciated worldwide, continuing to inspire new generations with its timeless beauty and depth.
